Chapter 8

The investigation was back on, and Jasmine decided to plow full steam ahead.

She had a shift at the Book Nook the very next day, and she wished she had a time machine so she could get there right this second. She had questions for Patrick, questions that burned. She just hoped they wouldn't burn any bridges.

For now, there wasn't a huge amount she could do. She could possibly go back to Ruby's house and try and dig for what had gone on between her and Jack... except it was only four o'clock and the woman wouldn't be home from work yet. She could try and find Brandon, pay him a visit at home, but such a visit had no bearing on her investigation. She had no further questions for him at this point, and the only reason she had for finding him was to try and assuage some of her guilt.

Which was something she knew she must do at some point. Unless, of course, it turned out that Brandon had done the unthinkable. In that case, she would be absolved.

What else was there? She had gleaned everything she could from Randy Ballard for now. And if Laura and Eugene Carter were giving the slip to their very own Julie Barnes, it was highly doubtful they would humor the efforts of a teenager.

She expressed all this aloud to Luffy as they walked back down Main Street, leaving the Herald behind.

"It's alright," Luffy said. "You'll be twenty in a couple of months."

She had to laugh at that.

"My age isn't the main concern," she told him. "It's the fact that I'm probably going to have to waste the rest of the day. There's nothing to do!"

"Sure there is," said Luffy. "What is that cops are always doing in those shows you watch? They go to the scene of the crime and stare off into space wistfully. Trying to get in the head of the killer, or whatever."

Jasmine shrugged. "I guess it's something."

The beach, then, became their next destination.

As they were crossing Main Street, a familiar and despairing sight was revealed to them. A cherry red convertible, parked up on the road outside the barbershop. Jasmine quickened her pace, hoping to avoid the driver of that car altogether, but fate had a different plan.

Just as they passed in front of the barbershop, the door opened and Barry Brock stepped out, looking trim with his fresh haircut. He smiled down at Jasmine as he pulled on a pair of sleek leather gloves.

"Good afternoon, Ms. Moore," he said. "And to you, Luffy. Still running around without a leash, I see. What gives?"

"What gives is that I'm the best-behaved dog in town," Luffy said. "But I'll still bite your nose off, you sorry sack of-"

He stopped when Jasmine lay a hand on his head.

"Luffy doesn't stray," she said. "He doesn't need a leash."

"My dear child," said Barry, "any dog will stray under the right circumstance. Let's see... a fun looking squirrel darts out from under a parked car.
